Plain-language education for business owners. This describes the category, not any specific offer, and is not medical advice.

What androgenetic alopecia is

The common, inherited pattern of hair loss that affects an estimated 80 million Americans, around 50 million men and 30 million women. It is progressive, which is why treatment is framed as an ongoing program rather than a one-time fix. This is a plain description of the category for business owners. It is not medical advice and not an offer of treatment.

What the common treatments are

Topical minoxidil is FDA approved for pattern hair loss in both men and women, and oral finasteride is FDA approved for men. Clinicians also use low-dose oral minoxidil, spironolactone and topical finasteride off-label, at their own discretion and not for every patient. Finasteride and dutasteride are not appropriate for women who could become pregnant.

Why weight loss can cause shedding

Rapid weight loss and the nutritional change that comes with it are established triggers for telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding phase. A study published in The BMJ in July 2026 found a modest increase in hair loss risk among people taking GLP-1 medications. Absolute risk stayed low and the pattern usually resolves once weight stabilises.

How telehealth prescribing works

A licensed clinician reviews a client's health history through a secure intake, decides whether treatment is appropriate, and, where it is, issues a prescription that a licensed pharmacy fills. The clinician, not the business, makes every clinical decision, and not everyone qualifies.

What compounding means

Compounded medications are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies for an individual patient. They are not the same as, or interchangeable with, brand-name approved drugs, and no such claim is made. Availability varies by state and by clinical judgement.

What a salon can and cannot say

A salon can say it offers access to a medical program and that a clinician will assess the client. It cannot diagnose, cannot recommend a specific medication, and cannot promise regrowth or any other result. Those boundaries are not optional and they are what keep the arrangement clean.
